St. Paul’s Technology Goals for Students by Grade Level
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
The student has ability to operate a computer as a tool to enrich their education.
BASIC OPERATIONS
Grades K-2:
Turn on a computer and shut down a computer.
Log into a managed account using Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys.
Understand what the desktop is.
Be able to start an application by double-clicking an icon.
Understand what a keyboard and mouse is and how they work.
Identify keys on keyboard such as: letter keys, number keys, space bar, backspace, the arrow keys.
Identify home row keys and understand proper finger placement, and posture for typing.
Grades 3-5:
Demonstrate how to print using an application.
Understand file management by being able to save and delete files.
Understand the task bar, start button and able to find applications.
Demonstrate intermediate keyboarding skills, hands on home row, proper fingering, low mistakes when typing a minimum of 10 words per minute.
Grades 6-8:
Understand what an operating system is and be able to navigate through it with ease.
Identify successful troubleshooting strategies for minor hardware and software issues such as frozen application or document not printing.
Able to operate peripheral devices independently such as iPad, iPhone, camera, scanner if available.
Identity and use various storage methods such as flash drives, cloud drives, DVDs or CDs.
Demonstrate keyboarding skills by typing 25 words per minute with minimal errors.
WORD PROCESSING
Grades K-2:
Understand what a word processing application is and what it is used for.
Able to use a word processing application to write, edit, print, and save simple assignments.
Insert a picture into a document and scale it up or down.
Grades 3-5:
Utilize tools such as font size/style, line spacing, margins, paragraphs.
Understand how to copy and paste text and images within a document.
Proofread the document utilizing spell check and other corrective tools.
Grades 6-8:
Use more advanced features of a word processing application such as tabs, indents, headers and footers, bullets and numbers, and tables.
Create, save, and open information in a word processing application that came from other digital sources.
DATA ORGANIZATION AND SPREADSHEETS
Grades K-2:
Understand using a spreadsheet is a numerical way to display data.
Grade 3-5:
Show an understanding of a spreadsheet as a tool to record, organize, and graph information.
Identify terms and concepts of spreadsheets such as cell, column, row, values, chart, graph.
Enter and edit data in a spreadsheet and perform simple mathematical formulas (=: +, -, *, /).
Grades 6-8:
Describe the use of spreadsheets to calculate, graph, organize, and present data in a real-world setting.
Create an organizational spreadsheet.
Use various numbers formats such as whole, decimal, and scientific notation.
Produce simple charts and graphs.
INTERNET ACCESS
Grades K-2:
Understand that the internet connects various computers around the world, allowing people to access information and communicate.
Grades 3-5:
Understand and use age appropriate online tools and resources.
Save, retrieve, and delete electronic files on a networked drive (for example: \\students).
Understand terms relating to networks such as username, password, network, and file server.
Identify terms related to the internet such as world wide web, URL, search engine, keyword, and links.
Use search engines such as Google to locate and extract information by selecting appropriate key words and having the ability to find St. Paul’s website using search engines.
Grades 6-8:
Use the internet to access information.
Understand what the ending to each website represents (examples: .com, .org, .edu, .gov, .au).
Understand what a local area network is and how it is different from the internet.
Explain and correctly use terms related to online learning such as Google Docs, Google Drive, forum, account, password, and drop box.
Understand that some websites require plug-ins and specific browsers or browser versions to access them.
Utilize Gmail and Google Calendar as tools to communicate with other classmates and teachers as well as organize time.
MULTIMEDIA AND PRESENTATION TOOLS
Grades K-2:
Understand that computers are capable of making video, slideshows, and interactive content that the interactive boards utilize.
Make a basic PowerPoint presentation with words and pictures.
Grades 3-5:
Create, edit and format text in an existing PowerPoint or Google Slides slideshow.
Create a series of slides in a presentation to present research or to convey an idea.
Add graphics from other digital sources to a presentation.
Create a basic video and present it.
Grades 6-8:
Create a multimedia presentation using various types of media such as audio, video, animation, and slides.
Understand how to upload and share their presentation with others.
WEBSITE AUTHORING
Grades 6-8:
Understand what a Google site is and be able to create and edit a Google site.
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Understanding the responsible use of technology while understanding the safety issues and ethics that come with it.
ETHICS
Grades K-2:
Follow classroom and school rules for responsible use of computers, printers, and other digital resources.
Understand the importance of not stealing other peoples’ work and presenting it as their own and to give credit to sources of information that is used for projects.
Grades 3-5:
Demonstrate compliance with the acceptable use policy regarding responsibility.
Understand the consequences of inappropriate use of technology.
Understand what copy written material is.
Grades 6-8:
Understand ethical issues relating to privacy, plagiarism, spam, viruses, hacking, and piracy.
Understand the consequences of violating copyright law in a school setting.
Understand the appropriate use of communication tools such as chat or email.
Understand the ramifications for violating one’s personal privacy.
CLASSROOM AND SOCIETY
Grades K-2:
Understand why there are rules for using technology at home and at school.
Identify the purpose of a media messages to inform, persuade, or entertain.
Describe how people use various types of technology in their daily lives.
Grades 3-5:
Identify the way in which technology is used in the workplace and society.
Able to work collaboratively online with other students under teacher supervision.
Analyze media messages and determine if their purpose is to inform, persuade, or entertain.
Understand that there are websites and search engines that may include sponsored material or commercial links.
Understand how technology can enable people with disabilities to learn.
Grades 6-8:
Understand the ways the technology effects society.
Analyze and explain how media and technology can be used to distort, exaggerate, and misrepresent information.
Give examples of hardware and applications that enable people with disabilities to use technology (example: Stephen Hawking) or people with hearing disabilities.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Grades K-2:
Follow school rules for safe internet.
Understand why a password is used and how it keeps us safe.
Grades 3-5:
Recognize and describe the potential risks and dangers associated with different forms of internet based communication.
Understand the strategies used for safe internet use.
Understand that you should never give away personal information to someone over the internet.
Understand not every website is safe to go to and recognize potentially dangerous websites on a search engine.
Identify cyber bulling.
Grades 6-8:
Demonstrate and explain proper use of social media websites.
Demonstrate the safe use of email and online communication.
Explain the potential risks associated with the use of networked information.
Provide examples of safe and unsafe internet usage practices.
Understand why computers and networks need to be protected from viruses, hacking, and digital vandalism.
Use safe and appropriate practices when participating in online collaboration.
Explain and demonstrate the use of safe practices to protect one’s personal information online or on their mobile device.
Understand how cyber bulling can be blocked.
DATA GATHERING AND INTERPRETATION
Demonstrate the ability to use technology for research, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, communication, creativity and innovation.
Research (Gathering and Using Information)
Grades K-2:
Use age appropriate applications to find information on a subject.
Grade 3-5:
Locate and organize web content from digital sources for specific purposes and citing those sources.
Perform basic searches on digital databases such as Encarta Kids, Encyclopedia Britannica, and library systems.
Evaluate internet resources in terms of their usefulness for research.
Demonstrate the ability to utilize a search engine to find information.
Grades 6-8:
Explain and demonstrate effective searching and browsing strategies when working on projects.
Collect, organize, and analyze digital information from a variety of sources.
Demonstrate the ability to use more than just a computer to gather information digitally.
Demonstrate the ability to distinguish between reputable sources of information and misinformation.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Grades K-2:
Use age appropriate technology to gather and analyze data.
Grades 3-5:
Explain how to use technology to document a problem then propose a solution.
Use word processing applications or spreadsheets to make predictions, solve problems, and draw conclusions.
Grades 6-8:
Independently use appropriate technology tools to figure out the solution to a problem.
Use and modify researched information to propose solutions.
Understand how to look for help online and through user forums to find solutions to a problem.
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION
Grades K-2:
Use age appropriate technology to communicate ideas.
Grade 3-5:
Create projects that use various forms of graphs, audio, and videos.
Use Google Docs to create documents that others can collaborate on.
Communicate with other students using approved technology to share ideas.
Grades 6-8:
Plan, design, and develop multimedia projects.
Master the use of collaborative word processing or presentation tools.
